This handsome fella is getting his tonsils and adenoids out bright and early Monday morning.
Unfortunately Andrew received several parting gifts from his days in the NICU, including tracheomalacia and a paralyzed vocal cord. These issues combined with some low muscle tone and extremely large tonsils (nearly touching) have resulted in airway and swallowing issues for Andrew.
His airway issues make surgeries/anesthesia higher risk for him so we would really appreciate your prayers. We are fortunate that Andrew will be in very good hands. He has an excellent surgeon and a special anesthesiologist with lots of experience with high risk airway and pediatric cases.
We've known for a long time this surgery was on the horizon and we put it off a long time to give him more time to grow so that it would be safest for Andrew.
Whenever Andrew gets even the slightest cold he has lot of trouble breathing, especially at night and he can't clear his throat. His lungs are really great but his airway is the culprit. Often he goes into coughing fits until he throws up. Breathing treatments just seem to irritate the situation and only oral steroids have ever helped him. He continues to have some feeding issues as well because it's hard for him to swallow, although he's come a long way from where he once was.
So our hope is that this surgery will make Andrew's life a lot better in these regards as well as allow him to sleep better.
Andrew is a trooper so we expect him to do great. Thanks for keeping him in your prayers for a safe procedure and a quick recovery!
