A special day

“Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven”
Mt 19:14

The day after Ally's first birthday party we had the honor of celebrating her baptism with almost all of her family in attendance.

She was baptized into the covenant family by our dear friend Wade whom had baptized Kenny as a believing adult many years ago and then also performed our wedding ceremony almost 9 years ago. Ally was baptized in the same church congregation that I was baptized in by my parents 34 years ago and which continues to be very dear to us. Such a beautiful image of God's covenant across generations.

Ally was trying her best to make this a baptism to remember. First she kicked her brother Adam and jerked on his hair several times. But The best part was when Kenny and I were asked questions for our part of the baptism, Ally confidently nodded her head "Yes!" Very dramatically in response to each of Pastor Wade's questions. Read the questions below and you can imagine the congregation cracking up as Ally made her dramatic affirmations along with ours ;-). Love my silly girl!

We parents made these three affirmations:

1. Do you acknowledge your child's need of the cleansing blood of Jesus Christ, & the renewing grace of the Holy Spirit?

2. Do you claim God's covenant promises in her behalf, & do you look in faith to the Lord Jesus Christ for her salvation, as you do your own?

3. Do you now unreservedly dedicate your child to God, & promise, in humble reliance upon divine grace, that you will endeavor to set before her a godly example, that you will pray with & for her, that you will teach her the doctrines of our holy religion, & that you will strive, by all the means of God's appointment, to bring her up in the nurture & admonition of the Lord?

Ally agreed to all these along with her parents :-). Unfortunately I forgot to get the video camera out of the bag and didn't get any of her antics captured.

"And I will establish My covenant between Me and you and your descendants after you in their generations, for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and your descendants after you." (Genesis 17.7)

"Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household." (Acts 16:31)

I often get questions from fellow believers about why we chose to baptize our children before they've made their own personal profession of faith. We believe that the children of believers, in this case ours, ought to be baptized because they belong to the covenant and people of God.

We do not however believe that baptism guarantees that Ally or her big brothers will be saved. We believe Salvation is always by grace alone, through faith alone, because of Christ alone (Eph 2.8-9). Faith, not baptism, is the instrument whereby the righteousness of Christ is received and imputed to the sinner. Baptism, however, is a sacrament of inclusion into the covenant of grace whereby God promises salvation to those who believe. It is also a seal, for the one who believes, that acts as a pledge and token which the Holy Spirit uses to give greater assurance of faith. (www.pcanet.org)

My greatest prayer and hope for my daughter Ally is that she would one day soon find true faith in Jesus Christ as her Savior. That her joy would come from believing in and abiding with The Lord all her days.

No matter what happens, the Lord is our shield! Praying!
Psalms 5:11-12 But let all those that put their trust in thee rejoice: let them ever shout for joy, because thou defendest them: let them also that love thy name be joyful in thee. For thou, LORD, wilt bless the righteous; with favour wilt thou compass him as with a shield.

Hebrews 13:20-21 Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, Make you perfect in every good work to do his will, working in you that which is wellpleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

Psalms 37:23-24 The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in his way. Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down: for the LORD upholdeth him with his hand.

Psalms 37:39-40 But the salvation of the righteous is of the LORD: he is their strength in the time of trouble. And the LORD shall help them, and deliver them: he shall deliver them from the wicked, and save them, because they trust in him.

Psalms 71:1-3 In thee, O LORD, do I put my trust: let me never be put to confusion. Deliver me in thy righteousness, and cause me to escape: incline thine ear unto me, and save me. Be thou my strong habitation, whereunto I may continually resort: thou hast given commandment to save me; for thou art my rock and my fortress.

We have an anchor in every storm! Praying!
Hebrews 6:17-20 Wherein God, willing more abundantly to shew unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed it by an oath: That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us: Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil; Whither the forerunner is for us entered, even Jesus, made an high priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.

Lifting up prayers!
Psalms 57:1-2 Be merciful unto me, O God, be merciful unto me: for my soul trusteth in thee: yea, in the shadow of thy wings will I make my refuge, until these calamities be overpast. I will cry unto God most high; unto God that performeth all things for me.

Psalms 130:1-2, 5-7 Out of the depths have I cried unto thee, O LORD. Lord, hear my voice: let thine ears be attentive to the voice of my supplications (5-7) I wait for the LORD, my soul doth wait, and in his word do I hope. My soul waiteth for the Lord more than they that watch for the morning: I say, more than they that watch for the morning. Let Israel hope in the LORD: for with the LORD there is mercy, and with him is plenteous redemption.

Psalms 59:16-17 But I will sing of thy power; yea, I will sing aloud of thy mercy in the morning: for thou hast been my defence and refuge in the day of my trouble. Unto thee, O my strength, will I sing: for God is my defence, and the God of my mercy.

Know that the Lord is always with you, wrapping His loving arms around you and holding on tight! Praying right now!
Psalms 18:2-6 The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower. I will call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies. The sorrows of death compassed me, and the floods of ungodly men made me afraid. The sorrows of hell compassed me about: the snares of death prevented me. In my distress I called upon the LORD, and cried unto my God: he heard my voice out of his temple, and my cry came before him, even into his ears.

Praying!
Psalms 18:30-32 As for God, his way is perfect: the word of the LORD is tried: he is a buckler to all those that trust in him. For who is God save the LORD? or who is a rock save our God? It is God that girdeth me with strength, and maketh my way perfect.
